Well, poop.

Just kinda bummed out these past few days. Really missing J… and to top it off on my way to work yesterday morning a deer decided to commit suicide by Cavalier and hopped out in front of my car.

I have killed deer with shotguns, rifles, and have even sliced the throat on one with a knife before, but this was my first deer with a car. She was a good sized, mature doe too – I’d guess in the 100-110 pound range. And I got her good, the poor Tank (nickname for J’s ’97 Chevy Cavalier) has some major front end damage. It was really weird, the whole thing felt like it took place in slow motion. I saw two does running out in front of me, slammed on the breaks, but knew that it was too late, I could not do anything about it. I saw the one hit the hood, bounce off, take a few leaps off the side of the road, and go down while the other kept running into the wood line. I can tell you that I hit the larger of the two does (of course it always seems to work out that way). It was just strange how I can see ever detail of the accident. I wrecked my truck many many years ago into a telephone pole (long story that doesn’t need to be shared) but that whole thing was a blur, grated it was lot worse wreck, but I cannot recall any of the details. But then again, that could also be attributed to me hitting my head against the windshield… And other than that the only other “wrecks” I have been in have all been purposely done in the demolition derby ring. Yes, I very much enjoy the “sport” of grown-up bumper cars, aka demolition derby. So this was a very different and new experience for me.

I was almost a tad bit excited (don’t judge) cause she was initially still alive and I thought I would have the opportunity to use my DiamondBack 9mm and get my first pistol kill to put her out of her misery. However Trooper Brett showed up and while we were talking/writing up an incident report, the doe passed away on her own. (Don’t worry, I did check just to make sure, I can’t stand animals suffering unnecessarily). Trooper Brett was very kind and helped out a lot. I had no idea what steps to take next and since it was about 6:20 in the morning on Mother’s Day Sunday, no one I called (except my own mother who is 4 hours away in Maryland and can’t do much from there) was awake to assist. He helped to calm me down some since I was a bit shaken up, looked over the car with me and agreed that it was drivable, wrote up an incident report that I could submit to insurance to prove that I did hit a deer and wasn’t at fault, and gave me his information if I needed any further assistance. Good job, Trooper Brett and the PA State Police – I am impressed and very appreciative!

Poor Tank

I got really lucky though. To my very expert knowledge (which actually isn’t that expert at all), I would guess that it just needs a new hood, hood latch, and headlight. It’s still drivable with no damage to any working parts, just cosmetic. I did Kelly Blue Book it and the value of the car in “good” condition is only around $2,200… so I am really not sure how much I want to put into it. Heck insurance might possibly total it just because it might not be worth it to fix. So perhaps, I’ll replace the head light and do some hammering to the hood and keep going, unless I can find one at a junk yard for a reasonable price. I mean the thing is dubbed The Tank for a reason. Then just save up money and look for a new car in the next year or so. I know J’s been talking about buying a new car when he gets back from deployment.

But even so, it was my first time hitting a deer, I did it in J’s car and not mine which makes it worse in my mind (luckily he’s not upset about it at all and is just happy that I am okay), have been in a bummed mood lately, and just putting it all together equals me having a sweatpants type lazy day off today. I think after all that’s happen I deserve it, what do you think? I have Call of Duty on the PlayStation updating it’s maps so my evening will consist of virtually killing people from my big comfy bed. And possibly I’ll throw in a chick flick, drink some wine, cuddle with the puppies, and cry a bit. That too, for some reason, sounds pretty appealing. God, I’m such a girl sometimes. Sigh.

On a side note, yesterday was Mother’s Day and today is my mama’s birthday. So I would like to give a shout out to my mama:

Mom, I love you very, very much! I am so blessed to have you and that we have such a strong relationship. You are not only my mother, you are my best friend and I value that more than you can ever imagine. You are the strongest woman person that I know and I can only help that one day I can be half the woman that you are. You truly are a real life superhero, and I know that everyone is jealous that I am so lucky to have you as my mama! I miss you dearly and wish that I could spend this day with you! I love you with all my heart! I hope to come visit and see you soon!

Love, your daughter, JoJo

And also, a Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mom’s out there! 🙂 I hope that y’all had a good Mother’s Day.

Peace out homies.

Scaredy cat!

Here’s your weekly (has it been weekly? I don’t think so but let’s pretend) zoo update. Elsie and Annabelle, the mini longhorns that mom brought up, are doing well. Elsie (the mom) has figured out the petting zoo routine and will come up and eat grain out of guests’ hands. The fainting goats are also doing well, just refusing to faint so everyone thinks their duds – I swear they are fainters! I am not sure why they won’t faint at the petting zoo, perhaps too many non-fainting goats? No clue.

Oh something funny happened today. When I was giving a safari tour we stopped at Icesis’ (the white Bengal tiger) enclosure. She is always a crowd pleaser, not just because she is stunningly beautiful,

but because she always comes up to enjoy being fed chicken pieces by the guest (off a long stick through a small cut out in wood surrounded by Plexiglas – we don’t let the guests actually touch the exotics per PA state laws). Sometimes she just needs a little coaxing out of her house, but she’ll come up. Also, she’s super gentle and very friendly with lots of chuffing (a tiger’s way of purring). The story goes that she use to be a Vegas show cat and even lived at the Playboy Mansion for some time. But anyways, I am rambling – back to the story. Icesis was chilling in her house and I called and called trying to get her to come out, finally she jumps down off her ledge in there and heads to the door, but then she jumped back about a foot and hissed at something in the hay at her entrance and refused to come out. I couldn’t see anything that would have startled her so I just kept calling and calling, finally she leaped high over the hay and came to visit but kept a wary eye on the hay by her house. Finally one of the guests noticed what it was that had her so scared – a tiny little garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis). This 400 pound cat is scared terrified of a 12 inch long, harmless garter snake! It was pretty humorous and was definitely the highlight of the tour.

Our days are about to start to pick up as we get closer to Memorial Day weekend and the official start of resort season. We have a few animal shows at various school groups over the next two weeks and I am extremely excited to do those! I just can’t wait to take small exotics to school and educate kids on the different animals on stage. Sounds like it’s going to be a ton of fun even if all of my co-workers think I’m crazy for being excited for it.

Diesel currently has his muzzle under my arm and keeps nudging my hands away from the keyboard trying to convince me he wants to go outside, so I probably better go do that. And I kinda smell like a zoo for some odd reason, so I probably should go shower as well… have a goodnight and I’ll talk to you soon. 🙂

PS – before I leave, here’s a few pics from Mom’s visit!

Birthday celebration of the four-legged variety!

Heyoooo!

What’s going on? I’m just enjoying a yoga pants and bum clothes day off. Since I usually work weekends my days off fall during the week most of the time, which really doesn’t affect anything for me.

Sigh. Yesterday, my baby, Diesel, celebrated his fourth birthday. I cannot believe he is already four years old! He had a good birthday, we actually celebrated the night before since the weather was perfect. Him and Glock (my other “adopted” boy), enjoyed some homemade peanut butter flavored doggy cake at a cookout, complete with marshmallows over the fire pit, although the pups didn’t get any marshmallows. He got his new leather collar from Gun Dog Supply and looks utterly handsome in it!

I still just can’t get over the fact he’s already four.

Work is still just as incredible as day one. I lead my first safari tour by myself yesterday and I think I nailed it even though it was cold and raining the group seemed to have a great time. We had an advanced horseback ride which is usually a 1 ½ – 2 hour intense, advanced ride jumping logs and creeks as well as full out cantering and galloping that has to be scheduled in advanced – not for a novice rider. I wasn’t on this ride since I was doing safari tours, but the group that came for the advanced ride when they were filling out their wavers told us they were really experienced riders since they have gone on two walking trail rides before and two of them had no experience and were a bit nervous around horses. Did I mention that this was an ADVANCED ride? Yeah. Okay, just making sure. I missed all the excitement but one of the group members ending up falling off their horse and refusing to get back on (they were completely fine, so no injuries, just hurt pride). I still have not decided if I am bummed I missed the excitement or glad to not have had to deal with it. We do get some interesting guests in, but so far everyone that I have met has been so friendly and just excited to learn about the animals. Even the rider that fell off still had a good time, just learned that horseback riding isn’t something she wants to continue. (On a side note for those non-horse riders out there, falling off is almost a requirement for becoming an experienced rider, it happens to everyone. I’ve fallen off multiple times myself.)

I am trying to think what else is going on in life right now… my boyfriend’s dad just bought a motorcycle, a 2007 Yamaha 650 Vstar Silverado. So, I am pretty excited about visiting him down in Virginia Beach this summer and going for a ride! I love bikes, and I really do plan on getting my license and eventually my own bike, just need to find the time and money for the course.  I washed my truck the other day. That was exciting; it was wayyyy overdue for a good bath. Oh oh! Nemacolin bought our miniature Texas longhorn heifer calf and some fainting goats for their petting zoo so mom is coming up to visit tomorrow and bring up the animals! That should be fun, I cannot wait to give her a tour of the zoo and have her meet all my new babies! My weight lifting is currently in slow mode since I am not sure where I will be living in the next month or so, I can’t get myself to throw down $100 and join a gym I might move away from. So right now all I have is calisthenics, running, and a set of adjustable dumbbells up to 55lbs, which is still not bad at all – I just miss the gym. Yeah, I know, I am kind of a meathead.

That’s all I can think of for now, I’ll let you know what mom thinks of the animals next time!

Have a wonderful day! 🙂
